The tyre thread dept is crucial for correct grip in the wet, huge volumes of water on the surface of the road have to be squeezed out by the tread grooves, so it is important to have as much tread depth as possible to displace as much water as possible. A new tyre has 8mm of thread depth and the legal limit is 1.6mm, however it should be noted that a tyre with 3mm tread depth which is the recommended minimum will take twice the distance to stop in the wet than a new tyre.
Get your tyres checked regularly for tread dept and condition, ie. side wall cuts and bulges.
Replace tyres when they reach 3mm.
Check your tyre pressures weekly. A tyre check will cost you nothing at Gowan Motors and will be carried out in minutes.
If you get a puncture and are an existing customer, call into our Service Department and we will repair the puncture free of charge.
Driving a dangerously defective vehicle will result in a mandatory court appearance, penalty points and a fine.
The legal tyre thread limit is 1.6mm across 75% of the width of the tyre around it's entire circumference.
However, it is recommended that you change your tyres once you get below 3mm, as there is a rapid deterioration in vehicle braking, accelerating and cornering below this point.
